About Ayr

The town of Ayr, in south-west Scotland, is home to more than 46,000 people and lies on the Firth of Clyde, just south of Prestwick and about 12 miles away from Kilmarnock, from where drivers can pick up the M77 motorway to Glasgow.

Ayr has a history stretching back to 1197, when a castle was built by the River Ayr. Today Ayr has a varied economy and enjoys close proximity to one of Scotland's busiest airports, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. Despite its name, Prestwick Airport is situated in Prestwick, not Glasgow, which is some 30 miles away!

Ayr's port continues to be active today and although none of the region's ferry services to Ireland and the Western Isles run from Ayr, it has good road and rail connections to the rest of the region.

Ayr's mixed economy and sizeable population means that the town generates a steady demand for van hire. Most types of van should be available to rent from branches within the town:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
  • Luton vans & box vans (3.5 tonne / 3.5t).
