About Birmingham International Airport

Birmingham Airport carries approximately nine million passengers a year to destinations all over the world. Its history stretches back to 1939, when it was opened as Elmdon Aerodrome, a civil facility operated by the local council. Although requisitioned for military use during the Second World War, it returned to civil use in 1946, since when it has operated continually. Birmingham International Airport is currently undergoing a number of expansionary works that should be completed by 2012 - in time for the London Olympic Games. These will enable the airport to handle many more passengers - an estimated 15 million in 2013.

Birmingham Airport has two terminals and operates flights to most parts of the world, including eastern and western Europe, the Middle East, North America and the Caribbean. Passenger flights are a mixture of scheduled and charter and a number of cargo flights also operate from the airport.
