About Burton Upon Trent

Undoubtedly the traditional centre of Britain's brewing industry, Burton upon Trent is most notably the home of the Bass brewing empire, from which many of its current breweries are descended. The reason for Burton's brewing eminence is simple - the local water. The high levels of gypsum in the hills surrounding Burton result in the local water having unusually high levels of dissolved salts. This in turn allows more hops to be used in the beer - which in turns allows the beer to be kept longer; hops are a natural preservative. In the days when London was several days journey away, being able to produce beer that kept longer gave Burton's Bass Brewery a powerful competitive advantage.

Although the brewery visitor centres are a popular attraction in the town, Burton also has some more sober places to visit. A church has existed for more than 1000 years on the site of the parish church of St. Modwen's. The church itself is a fine example of Gothic architecture and is named after the founder of the first settlement at Burton in the 7th century.

Burton upon Trent has at times suffered from a slight identity crisis - although located in East Staffordshire and thus the West Midlands, Burton addresses have Derbyshire postcodes and were at one time served by East Midlands utility companies.

Burton itself is home to more than 60,000 people and has all the facilities you would expect in a large town, including van rental. Van hire in Burton is readily available from a variety of companies, ensuring that all types of rental van are on offer:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
