About Caernarfon

Caernarfon (sometimes also spelt as Caernarvon or Carnarvon) is a Royal Town in north-west Wales. It's home to one of the finest stone castles in the UK - Caernarfon Castle was built by Edward I and towers over the town's harbour. The town has been continuously inhabited since Roman times and the remains of the Roman fort Segontium are also visible towards the edge of the town.

The residents of Caernarfon are the most fluent Welsh speakers in all of Wales - according to the 2001 Census, an impressive 86% could speak Welsh, with 97.7% of 10-14 year olds being fluent speakers! Approximately 10,000 people live in Caernarfon, which is located on the other side of the Menai Strait from Anglesey.

The town was once an important port, exporting slate from the quarries of the Nantlle Valley. Today, Caernarfon is far more dependent on tourism and boasts a Blue Flag beach and a range of historical attractions for visitors.
