About Canterbury

The Kent city of Canterbury was a major Roman settlement and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was captured and thoroughly rebuilt and modernised by the Romans in the first century AD. After the Romans left in 410AD, Canterbury underwent a period of decline before being resurrected as a religious centre, thanks to the construction of Canterbury Cathedral.

Today, Canterbury retains its significant role in the Church of England, with the head of the Church based in the city and bearing the title Archbishop of Canterbury. The town is also the location of the Whitefriars Shopping Centre, which opened in 2001, creating new employment and helping make Canterbury a regional shopping centre.

For visitors to Kent and the south east, Canterbury has a number of attractions. Founded in 597AD, Canterbury Cathedral is one of the finest in the UK and is also a World Heritage Site. Canterbury Castle is also popular with visitors and those in search of more maritime attractions will enjoy visiting nearby Herne Bay and Whitstable, with their arrays of traditional shops, galleries and fresh seafood.
