Dumbarton's long history can be traced back to at least the Iron Age and the town was once the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde! The town's location by the River Clyde helped facilitate the growth of shipbuilding and other industries in the 19th century, but today Dumbarton is far less industrial and is more popular as a commuter base for nearby Glasgow.

Perhaps the town's most notable landmark is Dumbarton Castle, which is situated on Dumbarton Rock - a huge outcrop of rock on the east bank of the River Leven. Dumbarton Castle's has hosted many distinguished visitors and been the scene of several major battles over the centuries. Today, it's more peaceful role is as a popular tourist attraction for visitors to the area. Dumbarton Rock itself is also popular with rock climbers, who appreciate its technical challenges.

Dumbarton has its own railway station and benefits from regular services to Glasgow and other nearby towns. Glasgow city centre is 45 minutes by train.
