The Cornish town of Falmouth has one of the deepest natural harbours in the world and has a long history as a port - something that continues today. Falmouth has more than 21,000 permanent residents and is also home to two campuses of University College Falmouth, providing the town with a sizeable student population.
Falmouth’s attractions include no fewer than five beaches – Castle, Tunnel, Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth – as well as Pendennis Castle, a 450-year old castle that started its life as one of Henry VIII’s coastal defences and ended it as a secret World War II base. Other attractions in the area include the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, which opened in 2003. Falmouth is popular with the yachting community and the base for much sailing activity, including several record-breaking round-the-world voyages.
