Gorseinon is home to around 8,000 people and forms part of the county of West Glamorgan. For more than 50 years it had the unusual distinction of being the home of the UK's smallest cinema. Known as La Charrette, the cinema was a converted railway carriage and was run by enthusiasts until its closure (due to the effects of age) in 2008.

Despite its relatively small size, Gorseinon has its own hospital. This was originally gifted to the town by a wealthy industrialist, Rufus Lewis, before the NHS existed. Gorseinon's convenient location and good road links mean that it has remained a popular place to live, despite the decline of the coal mining industry.
