For many years, Greenock's location on the deep-water side of the River Clyde made it the main ocean port on the west coast of Scotland. The dredging of an upstream deepwater channel to Glasgow meant that this role reduced during the 19th century but Greenock remained an important shipbuilding centre and port.

Today's Greenock is more dependent on service industry jobs although its port remains important to the region. The Greenock Ocean Terminal is the main container terminal for the west of Scotland and the harbour is also a regular stopping point for cruise ships. Although Greenock's population has shrunk since the 1960s, the town has now expanded sufficiently to almost merge with nearby Port Glasgow and Gourock.

One of Greenock's most famous inhabitants of all time is James Watt, the 18th century steam engine pioneer. Watt's achievements as an engineer is made him one of the most important figures of the Industrial Revolution. Greenock's James Watt College is named after him, as is the James Watt, a public house in the town.
