Harlow, in Essex, developed rapidly as a new town after WWII, although at its heart is a much older settlement - including some Roman remains. Local employment is centred around high tech industries, but Harlow is also within the London commuter belt, and many people commute to the capital.

Attractions for visitors to Harlow include the Roman Temple Site, the Museum of Harlow, Pets' Corner and The Gibberd Garden, a fine example of 20th century garden design and home to many notable sculptures. Harlow also has its own local nature reserves; indeed, the town has more than 250 acres of parks and nature reserves.
