Lancaster lies within the City of Lancaster, an administrative area that includes Morecambe, Carnforth and Heysham, as well as a number of smaller settlements. Lancaster itself is home to over 45,000 people and is well known for its castle, which was used as a prison until quite recently.

Lancaster's long history and association with the royal family through the Duchy of Lancaster, which holds large estates on behalf of the current Queen, Elizabeth II. The nearest port to the town is Heysham, from which ferry services and some cargo services operate.
