First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, Horsforth was considered the UK's largest village during much of the 19th century. Since 1999, it has been classed as a town, however, although it is closely linked to Leeds. Horsforth is located just to the north of Leeds and has its own railway station - on the Leeds-Harrogate line.

The area also has a long history of stone quarrying - providing the stone for Scarborough's sea front, among other locations.
