The south London town of Beckenham was for many years a village – it was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book and remained fairly rural until the coming of the railways made access from London fast and easy. Beckenham gradually grew and a series of large villas were developed in close proximity to the railway station.

One of the more bizarre landmarks in the area is the Chinese Garage - a petrol station built in the style of a Chinese pagoda. Now a listed building, it is no longer a garage but retains its motoring links as part of a car dealership.
