Settled since Stone Age times, Orpington was also the site of a Roman settlement. The name Orpington predates the Domesday Book, having first been used in 1032. Orpington also has long-standing links with the UK’s Romany community.

It was Orpington’s MP Eric Lubbock who in 1967 started campaigning for permanent gypsy sites – this resulted in the Caravan Sites Act of 1968 which obliges local authorities to provide sites for travellers.
