The market town of Newbury was founded in the 11th century. Today it is home to one of the UK’s best-known racecourses, to several major companies and to one of the more controversial roads built in recent years, the A34 Newbury Bypass.

Newbury is also the location of the real life Watership Down, made famous by the Richard Adams novel. Other attractions in the area include the ruins of 14th century Donnington Castle, the West Berkshire Museum and cruises on the Kennet and Avon Canal.
