Rochdale is a large town with a history of textile manufacturing. Its known history stretches back to an entry in the Domesday Book of 1086 and from the 13th century onwards, it assumed an increasingly important position in the UK's wool trade.

The town's leisure attractions include the Rochdale Pioneers Museum, which tells the story of one of the original 19th century co-operative shops. Other attractions include the Rochdale Way, a 50 mile circular walking route, and the Pennine Bridleway, a popular route with cyclists.
