About Walsall

The town of Walsall has a history dating back to at least 1002. By 1220 it had its market charter and in the 14th century it gained its own Mayor. Walsall remained a small town until the Industrial Revolution ignited growth - in 200 years, it grew from town of 2,000 people to one of 86,000 people!

Walsall's history is largely industrial, with coal mining and metal working having been important at different times. The town is also known for its leather products - something which continues today.

One of the main attractions in Walsall is its Arboretum. This park was opened in 1874 and became famous for its illuminations during the 20th century. Other attractions include The New Art Gallery, which contains works by a wide range of artists, many of whom have contemporary connections with Walsall.
