Weymouth, in Dorset, is on the south coast of England. Close to Dorchester, Weymouth is also the departure point for the roadway to the Isle of Portland.
Weymouth is home to a mixture of industries, including fishing, commercial shipping and tourism. Ferry services to the Channel Islands and France depart from Weymouth's harbour, too. The town itself has more than 50,000 permanent residents and its location on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast ensures that tourists swell this number considerably every summer.
The town has a wide, Victorian esplanade and impressive sandy beaches and Weymouth Bay itself is somewhat sheltered by the island of Portland, providing a restricted tidal range and relatively sheltered bathing conditions – ideal for a seaside resort. Weymouth lies at the end of a direct rail link from London Waterloo, making the 120 mile journey surprisingly fast and easy and providing an alternative route for holidaymakers not keen on peak summer traffic.
