The city of Wolverhampton sits in the West Midlands to the north-west of Birmingham and is also close to Walsall and West Bromwich. The city is home to more than 250,000 people and is the 13th largest city in England.
Wolverhampton's transformation from market town to city started with the growth of the woollen trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. Wolverhampton became a regional centre for this trade and its growth continued when it became a major mining and manufacturing area during the Industrial Revolution.
The city has the dubious distinction of being home to the UK's first automated traffic lights and was also the birthplace of the first car to hold the Land Speed Record at over 200mph.
