Worthing is a large, seaside town in West Sussex. Situated at the foot of the South Downs, it is close to Brighton and Littlehampton and home to around 100,000 people.

The West Sussex town of Worthing is at the heart of an area that has been settled for nearly 6,000 years. Worthing itself was for many years a small, fishing port – becoming a popular seaside resort when the 18th century trend for sea bathing began and further expanding as the railways spread their iron tentacles across the UK.

Worthing's Georgian architecture reflects the sudden influx of wealth that the first seaside visitors brought with them – as in nearby Brighton, it was the wealthy who first discovered the health benefits of a sojourn by the sea. The south coast was the nearest and most accessible from London – hence the development of so many elegant resorts along this stretch of coastline.

Visitors to modern-day Worthing enjoy a number of attractions. Worthing Pier was opened in 1862 and remains popular today, while The Dome cinema is one of the oldest working cinemas in the UK. 18th century Castle Goring and the 13th century Archbishop's Palace are both Grade I listed buildings and worth a visit, while the town's three theatres provide a diverse mixture of entertainment for the evening.
