{"id":136,"date":"2008-05-08T09:14:40","date_gmt":"2008-05-08T08:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/?p=136"},"modified":"2008-05-11T19:38:49","modified_gmt":"2008-05-11T18:38:49","slug":"uk-drivers-would-welcome-stop-start-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/136","title":{"rendered":"UK Drivers Would Welcome Stop-Start Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A survey of UK drivers by car supermarket <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motorpoint.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Motorpoint<\/a> has found that 3 out of 4 would buy a vehicle with a stop-start system &#8211; a system that automatically stops the engine when the vehicle is idling and starts it again as soon as the clutch is depressed.<\/p>\n<p>For vehicles undertaking extensive urban driving, stop-start systems have been shown to provide fuel savings of 5% &#8211; 10%; a very significant benefit, especially for commercial operators.<\/p>\n<p>Although frequent stop-start activity normally increases wear and tear to a vehicle&#8217;s starting system and engine, stop-start equipped vehicles are engineered to prevent this problem. A typical stop-start specification includes an uprated alternator and starter battery and built-in safeguards to prevent repeated cold starts or engine overheating.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Citroen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/21\" target=\"_self\">BMW and MINI offer such a system in their cars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/96\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes-Benz have recently introduced their Eco-Start system<\/a> on the Sprinter van and Atego lorry.
