{"id":2907,"date":"2012-02-13T12:11:19","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T12:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/?p=2907"},"modified":"2012-02-13T12:11:19","modified_gmt":"2012-02-13T12:11:19","slug":"govt-biofuel-targets-could-cost-motorists-2bn-per-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/2907","title":{"rendered":"Govt Biofuel Targets Could Cost Motorists \u00a32bn per Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The biofuels farce rumbles on&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Government targets to increase the proportion of biofuel in standard petrol and diesel to 10% by 2020 could cost drivers an extra \u00a32bn per year, according to new research commissioned by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foe.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of the Earth<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actionaid.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Action Aid UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The report found that by 2020, the cost of bioethanol (added to petrol) will be 16-35 pence more expensive than petrol per litre; similarly, biodiesel will be 29-42 pence more expensive than a litre of diesel.<\/p>\n<p><em>This means that the cost of fuel could rise by the equivalent of one litre per tank by 2020<\/em> &#8211; in addition to &#8216;normal&#8217; increases caused by increases in fuel duty and oil prices.\u00a0These costs are likely to be passed on directly to you and I.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, biofuels currently account for 4% of transport fuels and this requirement is set to rise to 5% in 2013. The government has said that it will consult on whether to aim for the full EU target of 10% by 2020.
