{"id":4404,"date":"2013-03-20T16:39:43","date_gmt":"2013-03-20T16:39:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/?p=4404"},"modified":"2013-03-20T16:44:58","modified_gmt":"2013-03-20T16:44:58","slug":"what-does-budget-2013-mean-for-van-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/4404","title":{"rendered":"What Does Budget 2013 Mean For Van Owners?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Budget 2013: Van owners are will see road tax increase in-line with inflation and and will pay slightly less fuel duty than they would have done, but there were no earth-shaking changes in today&#8217;s budget.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick summary of the announcements in today&#8217;s budget that may affect van owners and operators:<\/p>\n<h3>Vehicle Excise Duty (Road Tax)<\/h3>\n<p>The government has no plans to reform road tax in the current parliament.<\/p>\n<p>From 1 April 2012, road tax will increase in line with Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation. For van owners, this means \u00a35 per year more:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Vans (up to 3.5t) registered before 1 March 2001<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Engine size<\/td>\n<td>2012\/13 tax year<\/td>\n<td>2013\/14 tax year<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>1,549cc or below<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3135<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3140<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Above 1,549cc<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3220<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3225<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Vans <strong>(up to 3.5t)\u00a0<\/strong>registered on or after 1 March 2001<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Emissions rating<\/td>\n<td>2012\/13 tax year<\/td>\n<td>2013\/14 tax year<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Euro 4\/5 compliant<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3135<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3140<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>All other vans<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3215<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3220<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Fuel Duty<\/h3>\n<p>The Chancellor also announced that the proposed 1.89p increase in fuel duty that was planned for 1st September 2013 will be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>In a possible sign of things to come, the budget included confirmation that <strong>in 2015-16<\/strong>\u00a0<em>&#8220;the duty differential for\u00a0lique\ufb01ed petroleum gas will be reduced by the equivalent of 1 penny per litre.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>Anyone thinking about buying a van with an LPG conversion might want to consider this &#8212; cost savings of using LPG are solely down to its favourable tax treatment. You certainly don&#8217;t get better mpg and the fuel itself isn&#8217;t intrinsically cheaper.<\/p>\n<p>If LPG&#8217;s favourable tax treatment is reduced or removed, there is no real cost benefit. Interestingly, the difference between the main rate of fuel duty and the rate for\u00a0<em>compressed natural gas (CNG)<\/em> is going to be maintained. I wonder what the logic is in the different treatment of LPG and CNG?<\/p>\n<h3>Van Benefit Charge<\/h3>\n<p>Van benefit charge will be frozen at \u00a33,000 in 2013\/14 and will be increased in line with RPI from 6th April 2014.
