{"id":6418,"date":"2014-07-15T14:01:05","date_gmt":"2014-07-15T14:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/?p=6418"},"modified":"2014-07-15T14:19:28","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T14:19:28","slug":"ba-opts-for-petrol-power-to-avoid-diesel-headaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/6418","title":{"rendered":"BA opts for petrol power to avoid diesel headaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6419\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/mercedes-citan-ba-sm.jpg\" alt=\"British Airways Mercedes-Benz Citan Traveliner\" width=\"350\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/mercedes-citan-ba-sm.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/mercedes-citan-ba-sm-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>British Airways has made an unusual, but highly suitable, purchasing choice, by buying the first UK\u00a0Mercedes-Benz Citans to be fitted with petrol engines.<\/p>\n<p>The vans will be used by British Airways engineers and other technical staff based at Heathrow Airport to travel around the site between work assignments, and\u00a0are all long-bodied Traveliner 112 models, with five seats.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-eight Citans are now in service with the British Airway&#8217;s\u00a0Ramp Operations team, which is expanding. A further 18 vehicles have gone to BA Engineering, while 11 more will be delivered shortly, for use by BA World Cargo Operations.<\/p>\n<p>The Citan is the smallest commercial vehicle ever to wear a three-pointed star. It was launched last year, but the 1.2-litre petrol-engined version has only just been introduced,\u00a0and\u00a0British Airways&#8217; vehicles are the first to be powered by the new 114 hp petrol unit, rather than one of the diesel alternatives\u00a0chosen by most customers.<\/p>\n<p>The Citans are replacing diesel-engined vehicles by another manufacturer.\u00a0 BA Contract Management Executive Billu Kler explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Ours is not a typical transport operation. These vehicles are required to move staff from one aircraft stand to another, and between buildings around the airport.<\/p>\n<p>So journeys are invariably short, and undertaken at very low speeds. Diesel engines are not appropriate, because the fact that they never reach high temperatures means the particulate filters can struggle to cope and even become clogged.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>[This is an issue I&#8217;ve mentioned before, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/2841\">here<\/a>.]<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We were keen to keep things as simple as possible by identifying a single vehicle that would meet the needs of our various teams.
