That&#8217;s\u00a0perhaps the main reason why there has been such a steep comparative decline &#8212; this year&#8217;s figures are likely to be the new normal&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/smmt-cv-manu-jun14.png\" alt=\"SMMT CV manufacturing graphs June 2014\" width=\"535\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/smmt-cv-manu-jun14.png 535w, https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/smmt-cv-manu-jun14-300x134.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: SMMT<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the figures, Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, claims\u00a0that despite the poor figures, there are signs of optimism:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;UK commercial vehicle manufacturing figures continue to be swayed by operational restructuring in 2013 and the pull-forward of demand in the heavy commercial sector. There are signs of optimism, however, with double-digit growth in European commercial vehicle registrations, and the emergence of new products and investments across the sector.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr Hawes is right to point out that\u00a0CV registrations have risen in the UK and Europe this year, thanks to\u00a0rising demand for new vans, but I&#8217;m not sure how much effect this will have on\u00a0the UK&#8217;s CV manufacturers, as\u00a0there are now very few volume manufacturers, except &#8212; notably &#8212; Vauxhall, which continues to make the Vivaro van at its Luton plant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CV manfacturing continued to lurch lower as the impact of last year&#8217;s closures and downsizing works its way through the figures.
