They will remain on the fleet for the next five years, covering an average of 2,000 miles per year travelling between warehouses to load and unload casks at the beginning and end of the whisky maturation process.<\/p>\n<p>The Combo vans Chivas has purchased are powered by Vauxhall&#8217;s standard 1.3 CDTi 16v engine, for which the official\u00a0specification suggests fuel consumption of 57.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 129g\/km.<\/p>\n<p>These models are in ecoFLEX spec and\u00a0benefit from Start\/Stop technology, but while they are\u00a0likely to be an improvement on the outgoing vans, the idea that these emissions and\u00a0fuel consumption figures\u00a0are realistic for low mileage site use is laughable &#8212; although I suspect the CO2 figure played a role in the purchase choice. A petrol engine, although more suitable for low mileage use, would, on paper at least, have emitted more CO2.<\/p>\n<p>Still, that&#8217;s the inevitable result of the government&#8217;s myopic focus on CO2 emissions, to the exclusion of all else: diesels aren&#8217;t really that environmentally friendly, especially when they&#8217;re cold, and with the vans expected to average just over 5 miles per day, these engines are never likely to warm up fully or deliver the benefits they do offer for high-mileage users.<\/p>\n<p>Not only would faster-warming petrol engines (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/3331\">available in Combos<\/a>) be more suitable for such low mileage work, they would probably be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/2841\">less troublesome<\/a>, too &#8212; but really, this is a classic example of an application that is perfectly suited to electric vans.<\/p>\n<p>By sticking with Vauxhall, which doesn&#8217;t offer any electric vans, Chivas has missed an opportunity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/6217\">For similar money<\/a>, after allowing for the government&#8217;s plug-in grant, the spirits firm\u00a0could have purchased\u00a0Renault Kangoo Z.E. or Nissan e-NV200 electric vans, and reduced on-site emissions to zero.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chivas Brothers has renewed its site fleet with diesel-powered Vauxhall Combo vans, but it&#8217;s a massive missed opportunity to deploy electric vans, or at the very least, petrol-engined vans more suitable for low mileages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[9],"tags":[1438,1154,119],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6811"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6811"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6811\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6818,"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6811\/revisions\/6818"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6811"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6811"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6811"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
