{"id":7088,"date":"2015-02-03T17:25:12","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T17:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/?p=7088"},"modified":"2015-02-03T17:25:12","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T17:25:12","slug":"volkswagen-launches-telematics-service-for-vans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/7088","title":{"rendered":"Volkswagen launches telematics service for vans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/volkswagen-vans-n-lanarkshirecl-sm.jpg\" alt=\"Volkswagen introduces telematics service\" width=\"350\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/volkswagen-vans-n-lanarkshirecl-sm.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/volkswagen-vans-n-lanarkshirecl-sm-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Volkswagen has launched a new telematics service\u00a0targeting fleet customers across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>VW says that the new service is\u00a0suitable for fleets of any size and will work with all types of\u00a0vehicle,\u00a0enabling companies to manage mixed fleets with one system.<\/p>\n<p>The firm says that the new telematics system is being offered in partnership with the RAC &#8212; suggesting to me that it could be a rebadged and tweaked version of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/business\/sme\/telematics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">RAC&#8217;s own telematics service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen says the service will\u00a0be available from February and will have a\u00a0monthly contract fee of\u00a0\u00a312.50+VAT for each\u00a0telematics unit. Features available from the new service include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Location tracking<\/li>\n<li>Driver behaviour<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle diagnostics<\/li>\n<li>Odometer<\/li>\n<li>Geo-fencing<\/li>\n<li>Fuel and CO<sub>2<\/sub> monitoring<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Driverline\u2019 concierge service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Real-time\u00a0data and reporting is available through a customisable online portal, which is compatible with smartphones, tablets and laptops.<\/p>\n<p>The service is also intended to ensure that\u00a0fleet vehicles are properly maintained: the Driverline concierge service will\u00a0prompt fleet operators to book maintenance and\u00a0scheduled service visits at Volkswagen Van Centres when required.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to see that by offering a universal solution suitable for all makes and types of vehicle, Volkswagen has taken a different approach to some other manufacturers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/6294\">such as\u00a0Citro\u00ebn<\/a>, which fits its own-brand telematics solution to vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve written before, I believe telematics\u00a0will become ubiquitous in all fleets over the next 5-10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Even in daily rental fleets, where fleet operators are not directly responsible for\u00a0fuel costs or driver management, the benefits telematics can offer in terms of\u00a0tracking, diagnostics and compliance are very useful.
