Is the noise and hype surrounding electric\u00a0vans\u00a0being translated into sales? I’ve long been a supporter of the business case for electric vans, but new figures from Renault suggest that the electric revolution still has a long way to go before it starts to affect the wider\u00a0LCV market.<\/p>\n

Many vans do less than 60 miles a day and never venture outside the city — the ideal usage scenario for electric vehicles.<\/p><\/div>\n

According to Renault, the\u00a0Kangoo Z.E. is Europe’s best selling electric van, accounting for\u00a042.6% of the all-electric European LCV market\u00a0in 2015.\u00a0Renault says that it sold\u00a04,325\u00a0Kangoo Z.E. vans last year,\u00a0implying that\u00a0total electric LCV sales in Europe were 10,152 units.<\/p>\n

That may seem a reasonable number — and it is certainly much higher than a few years ago. But\u00a0in the UK alone\u00a0<\/em>in 2015, 423,894 new LCVs were registered. Looked at in this light, electric\u00a0van sales need to rise by around a factor of ten before they might start to have a significant impact on\u00a0pollution levels and\u00a0business buying habits.<\/p>\n

I remain bullish about the potential for electric vans, however, simply because they are so obviously well suited to many types of operation. Electric vans are gradually making inroads\u00a0across Europe too. Examples include the Norwegian<\/a> and French<\/a> postal services, British Gas<\/a> and a growing mixture of public<\/a>\u00a0sector<\/a> organisations and SME<\/a> businesses.<\/p>\n

Big potential cost savings are on offer:\u00a0a report last year from\u00a0the government and industry-backed\u00a0Go Ultra Low campaign<\/a> found that British businesses could save up to \u00a32.6bn per year by switching to electric<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
