The\u00a0peak figure of 9.821 units seen in June 2015 was 50% higher than production in May 2015 and was unlikely to be equalled this year.<\/p>\n<p>And so it transpires.\u00a0UK CV production totalled 7,686 units in June 2016, 21.7% lower than during the same period last year and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/archives\/9031\">down slightly from May<\/a>&#8216;s figure of 7,748 units.<\/p>\n<p>Total CV production\u00a0so far in 2016 is 2.2% lower than during the first six months of last year, thanks to a 7% slump in domestic demand.<\/p>\n<p>These figures would have been worse were it not for\u00a0continued strong\u00a0export demand. Export sales are up by 2.7% so far this year, which suggests to me that\u00a0at least\u00a0some eurozone economies are continuing to\u00a0grow:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9122\" style=\"width: 632px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9122\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-9122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/smmt-cv-prod-table-jun16.jpg\" alt=\"SMMT CV output June 2016\" width=\"622\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/smmt-cv-prod-table-jun16.jpg 622w, https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/smmt-cv-prod-table-jun16-300x69.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vanrental.co.uk\/vanblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/smmt-cv-prod-table-jun16-50x12.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Data courtesy of SMMT.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Commenting on the figures, Mike Hawes &#8212; SMMT chief executive &#8212; said that they emphasised\u00a0the importance of EU export markets to\u00a0the UK automotive sector:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDisruption to fleet renewal patterns triggered by type approval changes last year meant manufacturing output spiked by more than half in June 2015.<sup>1<\/sup> As a result, this year&#8217;s June\u00a0performance was always going to be negative so the drop is no surprise.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The market remains at a high level, buoyed by continuing resurgence in key EU markets, with more than half of UK CV output sold overseas. Maintaining the competitive trading conditions currently afforded by EU membership, including free access to major international markets, will be critical to this sector\u2019s future performance.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I believe these figures should be seen in a relatively positive context. June&#8217;s volume of 7,686 units is 21% higher than the 6,348 units produced two years ago, in June 2014. That&#8217;s\u00a0solid progress\u00a0given the mixed economic conditions in\u00a0the UK&#8217;s export markets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK CV production fell by 21% in June, according to the latest figures from the SMMT.
