The weak pound\u00a0is probably making UK\u00a0vehicles priced in euros slightly cheaper to buy,\u00a0hence rising export demand.\u00a0The switch to\u00a0Euro 6 emissions may have dampened demand in the UK, as\u00a0some buyers will have aimed to buy\u00a0cheaper Euro 5 models while they were still available.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the figures,\u00a0Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The drop in production last month comes as no surprise following the regulatory changes last year which significantly altered fleet renewal patterns. Despite the decline, the sector is broadly stable, with output remaining at a high level. Maintaining the competitive trading conditions currently delivered through membership of the single market and which underpin the strength of the sector will be critical to future performance.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>News today that Nissan will produce the next version of its popular Qashqai car at its Sunderland plant suggests that at least one manufacturer is confident about the future of automotive manufacturing in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s news about the Qashqai\u00a0comes just a\u00a0week after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2016\/oct\/14\/nissan-chief-executive-carlos-ghosn-meets-theresa-may-brexit-talks\">Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn met with\u00a0Prime Minister Theresa May<\/a>.\u00a0I suspect the\u00a0close timing of these two events isn&#8217;t a coincidence&#8230; I wonder what was said &#8212;\u00a0and if other manufacturers will follow\u00a0suit\/receive the same assurances?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK commercial vehicle manufacturing output fell by 0.7% in September, as a surge in export demand was offset by lower UK orders.
