If you&#8217;re not familiar with\u00a0how big rental brands work, that statement could seem a bit confusing. So let me explain.<\/p>\n<p>Travelling around Europe, you see the same car and van hire brands everywhere you go.\u00a0Most people probably assume that they are all run by the same company, but in fact many\u00a0are operated as franchises under licence from a parent company.<\/p>\n<p>Expanding into new countries has pros and cons for big companies.\u00a0One the one hand,\u00a0much lower levels of investment are required, as the franchisee\u00a0foots much of the bill. On the other hand, it&#8217;s necessary to sacrifice some profit and control of the business to the\u00a0franchisee.<\/p>\n<p>Since Europcar floated on the\u00a0Paris stock exchange last year,\u00a0it has\u00a0introduced a policy of buying back some of its best-performing franchises. Europcar Ireland is the second major franchise Europcar has bought back during this period.<\/p>\n<p>By taking control of\u00a0franchises such as this one, Europcar is likely to be able to\u00a0make cost savings in terms of\u00a0vehicle procurement and\u00a0back office functions. The group will also gain firmer control of pricing\u00a0in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Europcar&#8217;s customers in Ireland are unlikely to notice any difference.
