Shepton Mallet is a town of less than 10,000 people in the Mendip district of Somerset. The area is known for its traditional fruit-growing and cider-making industries and is popular with tourists. Shepton is also very close to Pilton and Glastonbury – home of the eponymous annual music festival.
The town's history is known to stretch at least as far back as the mid-11th century, possibly further. It provides an excellent base to explore the surrounding area as well as being an attractive place to visit itself. Shepton Mallet's Grade I-listed Church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 12th century and the town has many other interesting buildings. Other attractions in and around the town include Glastonbury Abbey, the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Wookey Hole Caves and Longleat Safari Park. Cheddar Gorge is also nearby.
