If you are taking a rented vehicle outside the UK, you will need a VE103 form (Vehicle On Hire Certificate). This is normally provided by your rental company and proves that you have the vehicle owner's permission to take it abroad. European breakdown cover is also advisable, this is normally included in the standard hire rates of companies offering UK-Spain van hire.
Ferry tips: There are three ferry services between the UK and Spain, all of which are operated by Brittany Ferries:
- Portsmouth, UK - Santander, Spain
- Plymouth, UK - Santander, Spain
- Portsmouth, UK - Bilbao, Spain
These services take around 24 hours (there are some variations) and cabins are available on all services. Most parts of Spain can be reached within a day's drive of Bilbao or Santander, saving a lot of time and mileage driving through France.
