About Stevenage
The Hertfordshire town of Stevenage is home to around 79,000 people and was the UK's first designated new town. Although this was not popular at the time, it paved the way for the massive expansion of Stevenage - its sleepy old town being joined by a formally-planned new town that provided ample good quality housing and schools for emigrants from London.
Stevenage's new town heritage is evident in its road system - wide, well-planned roads with lots of roundabouts, separate cycle paths and wide green verges. In this way, it is very similar to Milton Keynes, another famous new town.
Attractions in the Stevenage area include Knebworth House, a gothic stately home and outdoor concert venue, Benington Lordship Gardens and the Cromer Windmill, a fully-restored and working windmill five miles to the north east of Stevenage.
