About Bradford
The West Yorkshire city of Bradford is located on the edge of the Pennines - an area of countryside made famous by the novels of the Bronte sisters, such as Pride and Prejudice. Bradford itself was historically an industrial city and was one of the leading wool production centres in the world in the late 19th century.
Since then, the city's traditional industries have declined and been replaced by more modern alternatives - where once were mills, today there are more modern engineering and manufacturing businesses, IT companies, call centres and large retail centres. The city's heritage is not forgotten, however. Nearby Saltaire is a beautifully-preserved industrial village, showing just how the many thousands of people who once worked in Bradford's textile mills would have worked and played. Saltaire has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an essential place to visit for anyone exploring the area.
The city of Bradford also includes the districts of Baildon, Bingley, Denholme, Cullingworth, Ilkley, Shipley and Silsden. Other attractions in the area include several museums - such as the popular National Media Museum - and of course perhaps the largest choice of Indian restaurants in the UK! Bradford is well known for its Asian cuisine and is often considered the 'Curry Capital' of the UK.
