About Cambridge
Often known as the city of dreaming spires - thanks to its spectacular old university buildings - Cambridge is an ancient town that's grown into a modern centre for education, science and technology. Settlements in the Castle Hill area of Cambridge have been traced back as far as 1000BC. The Romans also established a military outpost in the area and following their departure both Saxons and Vikings maintained settlements in the same area, benefiting from the presence of the River Cam and the defensive position offered by Castle Hill.
The university was founded in 1209 by students fleeing from Oxford - and the rivalry between these two famous universities continues to this day, although on a rather more friendly basis than once was!
