About Castleford
Castleford forms part of the metropolitan borough of the City of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire. Despite this, Castleford is a sizeable town in its own right, with a population of more than 40,000 and a history stretching back to Roman times.
As was the case for a number of towns in this area, Castleford's growth really took off in the 19th century. A combination of railways, steam engines and booming demand meant that the coal mining industry multiplied in size many times over.
