About Cavan
Cavan is a historic town in Ireland. It lies roughly midway between Dundalk and Sligo, close to the border with Northern Ireland. Home to about 4,000 people, Cavan is a historic town whose history can be traced back to the 14th century, when it was founded by the King of East Breifne, who was a member of the O'Reilly clan.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Cavan grew as a result of its location on the Great Northern Railway and Midland Great Western Railway lines. Today the town doesn't have any rail links but it remains well located for road travellers, at the crossroads of two major routes, the N3 and N55.
