About Chelmsford

The history of the ancient town of Chelmsford can be traced back to at least 1199, when the town's market was first established. Prior to this, it was also an important Roman settlement, thanks in part perhaps to its proximity to the Thames and the east coast. More than 800 years later, Chelmsford town centre still boasts a traditional market 5 days a week.

Chelmsford and its surrounding suburbs of Springfield, Great Baddow, Chelmer Village, Broomfield, Writtle and Widford are home to nearly 160,000 people. About 80,000 people work in and around Chelmsford itself and many thousands more commute to London and to other towns in the area, thanks to Chelmsford's good rail and road connections. Chelmsford is also just half an hour's drive from London's Stansted Airport, making it attractive to staff and regular travellers at this airport.

Although historically an agricultural area, since the early 20th century Chelmsford has been home to a diverse mixture of light industry, commerce, retail and agriculture. The inventor of radio, Marconi, for many years had its base in Chelmsford and the first official public radio broadcast took place from Marconi's factory in 1920. Another feature of modern life that we take for granted, street lighting, was also born in Chelmsford at the factory of Colonel Crompton.

Chelmsford is a large, county town and has a correspondingly wide range of local businesses, including a comprehensive range of car and van hire companies. Hiring a van in Chelmsford is correspondingly easy, with local rental suppliers offering a full range of hire vans:

  • Medium vans - e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, Volkswagen Transporter
  • Small vans - e.g. Vauxhall Combo, Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy
  • Large / long wheelbase vans - e.g. Mercedes Sprinter XLWB, Ford Transit LWB, Renault Master
