About Chertsey
Just to the south-west of London, Chertsey lies alongside the River Thames and is popular with houseboat owners. The town is also close to Heathrow Airport, Thorpe Park theme park, Staines, Slough and of course London itself - so it's no surprise that it is a popular and desirable place to live.
The town is home to around 16,000 people and is an attractive historical market town. Its history dates back to at least 666AD, when Chertsey Abbey was founded by the then Bishop of London, Eorcenwald. Since then, the town has developed steadily, with the 18th century Chertsey Bridge an important crossing point for the River Thames.
Chertsey's riverside location and proximity to London and the M25 means that it is a popular place for houseboat owners, who moor their boats along the riverside and benefit from Chertsey's local dockyard and marina facilities. Visitors can also hire boats to take on the river for the day and attractive locations such as Windsor are within an easy day's cruising.
