Corby was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and has been established continuously ever since. Iron ore has been extracted from the ground in the area since Roman times and for many years Corby was a major iron and steel production centre. Its huge iron and steel works dominated the town from the mid 1930s until their closure in 1979.
The town underwent substantial expansion in the 1950s as a result of its being designated a new town. The orderly road layout and good town planning visible today are a legacy of this relatively recent expansion - and as a result Corby benefits from a number of parks and open areas.
Attractions in the area include Rockingham Speedway, an all-seater motor racing circuit hosting a variety of different types of racing, and Rockingham Castle. The Castle is 450 years old and is the only inhabited castle in Northamptonshire. It's open to visitors in the summer - as is the Wistow Maze. This 8 acre outdoor maze has 4 miles of paths and makes a great family day out.
Although it's not as industrial as it once was, Corby remains home to a wide range of businesses as well as more than 50,000 people. With this in mind, it's not surprising that there are a number of van hire companies in Corby, each offering a wide range of rental vans:
