About Dorking

The Surrey market town of Dorking lies in the picturesque North Downs, about 6 miles south of Leatherhead. Dorking's location in an attractive rural area close to the M25 has inevitably made it a popular choice of home for commuters to central London, many of whom rely on the town's direct rail services to London Victoria and London Waterloo.

Visitors to the town may be interested to know that Dorking was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The town grew in the mid-18th century as a result of its location on the turnpike road to Brighton and the south coast. Although the advent of the railways marked the start of a terminal decline for the stagecoach business, Dorking continued to thrive for much the same reasons it remains popular today; it's a scenic location close to London.
