About Dover

Best known as a major channel ferry port, Dover is in Kent, on the south coast of England. Its famous white cliffs make it instantly recognisable when approached by sea, and in summer, the nearby beaches are a popular draw for visitors, as is Dover Castle.

Many of the major channel ferry shipping lines operate from Dover - including P&O Ferries and SeaFrance. Destinations include Calais, Dunkirk, Dieppe and Boulogne. Many of the town's 30,000 or so residents work for the ferry companies and the town's fortunes are closely tied to those of its port operations.

Dover is the closest point in the UK to continental Europe - at just 22 miles. Back on dry land, Dover also has good access via the A2/M2 and M20 to the M25 and onwards to London, the Midlands and the south east.
