About Elgin

A Royal Burgh, Elgin is a former cathedral city with a history that dates back more than 1000 years. Its castle was built in the 12th century and was followed in 1224 by the foundation of a cathedral for the Bishop of Moray. The original cathedral was burnt down in 1270 and unfortunately its replacement was not as well built - resulting in the crumbled ruins that are all which remain today.

Elgin was popular as a hunting retreat for Scottish monarchs - its surrounding forests providing fruitful hunting grounds - and has been a stopping point for many notable Scottish and English visitors over the centuries.

The area around Elgin is home to two major RAF stations - RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Kinross. These contribute very significantly to the local economies and are also directly and indirectly responsible for more than 20 per cent of employment in the area, making them extremely important in Moray.
