About Galway
Galway is situated at the mouth of the River Corrib, where it flows into the natural harbour of Galway Bay. The city has a long history as an important harbour, and as one of Ireland's most historic settlements. Galway's history can be traced back to 1124, when a fort was built by the River Corrib. This became the town and then city of Galway.
Visitor attractions in Galway include the ruins of Menlo Castle and the remains of the 13th century Hall of the Red Earl, which is the oldest remaining part of the medieval settlement within the city walls. Galway is also known for its rich creative arts culture and is home to much live music and other performing arts.
A number of major companies have offices and manufacturing facilities in the area, providing strong support for the local economy. Galway's transport links are also good and include a local airport, in addition to road connections via the M18 and M6 motorways and a rail link to Dublin.
