About Goole
Goole is a large town and port in East Yorkshire. Situated on the River Ouse, about 20 miles to the west of Hull and 15 miles to the north of Scunthorpe, Goole is home to around 18,000 people and its inland port handles up to 3 million tonnes of cargo every year.
Goole's history stretches back to 1826 precisely, when the town was created by the Aire and Calder Navigation Company who had just started to ship coal from Knottingley directly to the coast. Goole was used as a transhipment point to transfer the coal from inland barges to ocean-going vessels.
As a consequence, Goole's docks form the oldest part of the town with the majority of the town dating from the Victorian period. Goole's history is reflected in one of the main attractions in the town, the Yorkshire Waterways Museum.
