For many years, Greenock's location on the deep-water side of the River Clyde made it the main ocean port on the west coast of Scotland. The dredging of an upstream deepwater channel to Glasgow meant that this role reduced during the 19th century but Greenock remained an important shipbuilding centre and port.

Watt's achievements as an engineer is made him one of the most important figures of the Industrial Revolution. Greenock's James Watt College is named after him, as is the James Watt, a public house in the town.
