About Livingston
The West Lothian town of Livingston was just a small village until 1953, when it was designated as the fourth new town in Scotland. The result was intensive development of new housing and commercial property and the rapid expansion of the population to the 55,000 it is today.
New towns were needed to alleviate unacceptably poor housing conditions in major cities - principally Glasgow in this case - and as a result were carefully designed with modern living in mind. Livingston benefits from a modern road network, ample car parking and good transport links - as well as a large amount of planned housing.
Over the past few decades, Livingston has also become an important centre for hi-tech businesses in Scotland - leading some to refer to the area as Silicon Glen!
