About London Docklands
The Port of London was once the largest port in the world. However, the invention and rapid adoption of containerisation in the 1960s spelt the end for the docks - they were simply unable to handle the larger ships required to make efficient use of the container system.
By 1980, all of the docks had closed and the area they had once occupied in East London was derelict - and a breeding ground for crime, social problems and poverty. The government of the time decided to initiate a large-scale redevelopment project aimed at regenerating the area, which including parts of the boroughs of Southwark, Newham, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets, and become known as London Docklands.
Today, Docklands contains a wide range of high-end residential and commercial developments. The Docklands Light Railway connects the area to the City, where many of its residents work and London City Airport, also located in the Docklands area, enables people to fly from the City to destinations all over Europe.
