About Monmouth

Monmouth is the county town of Monmouthshire and a well-known historic town in Wales. It lies close to the English border, where the River Monnow meets the River Wye. Monmouth's history can be traced back to Roman times, when the location was home to the Roman fort of Blestium. This was one of a network which marked the outer edge of Roman territory.

The present day Monmouth Castle is a little more recent. Although the original castle dates back to 1066, very little remains of this today. As was often the case, the castle went through several evolutions. The main remaining building today is the Grade I-listed Great Castle House, which dates back to 1673.

Monmouth is a picturesque town with good road connections to south Wales and the West Midlands. Although the population is relatively modest, at about 10,000, van hire is available locally:
